YES WE CAN
For the first time, in a long time, I am proud of this country.

Something that other friends of mine in Canada have been saying is that we've spent so much time feeling/acting superior to Americans that it's an odd experience to just be happy for and proud of you right now. But we do.

I was expecting this but it still feels unreal, like a movie.

See, I want to say I expected it -- but in all honesty, it felt dangerous to expect it. I was hoping with everything I could muster, but we've all been let down so many times before.

In talking to Chels, we were both SO emotional during the acceptance speech. I didn't think I would be so... involved but finally, FINALLY! Throughout the campaign Obama has leaned on the buzzwords of Hope and Change, and they began to feel like mere buzzwords... and yet now, hope is the singular emotion I am feeling. It feels like I will be waking up to a new and impossible America tomorrow. It feels like a new world. I feel like anything is possible. and that the world is cheering with us for once.

I am so immensely proud of that man. Of his nobility, of his dignity, and of his integrity.

I am sitting here listening to "We Shall Overcome" and just overwhelmed by the fact that this will still be here when I wake up tomorrow.

Sometime maybe a week and a half ago I realised that no, they're not going to take it away from us in a straight election this time. They're not going to capitalise on people's baser natures this time. They might steal it, they might shoot him, but they won't win just on a platform of original sin this time. I worried when I saw the pictures of huge lines at the polling stations, but I thought, "no, it's too late, everyone's invested and they can't use laziness this year to kill it."

And then hearing the opening lines of his speech, that this was possible all along...it feels good to be alive tonight. I can't believe we deserved him.
